Why this consultation?
The results

Tourism, which has been widely democratized, is a vector for global development and openness, with visitor flows expanding continuously. However, tourism-related environmental and societal impacts are mounting concerns. The health crisis has upset this industry by bringing it to a an almost complete halt, highlighting both the importance of tourism and its effects.

New consumption behaviors appeared in response to the current crisis, and tourism is transitioning to become more sustainable.

France is the leading destination worldwide in terms of arrivals (90 m in 2019), its tourism industry contributes to 7,5% of the GDP and supports 2 million jobs. Major challenges are arising and finding balance will be key:

  • preservation of the tourism wealth
  • the economic struggles,
  • the necessary evolutions,
  • growth ambitions
  • local populations acceptance
  • need to travel
  • eco-consciousness

In these unprecedented times, the entire tourism ecosystem seeks to interrogate its current version, transform or reinvent it. Many travel industry professionals, in all types of territories (cities, coastal destinations, mountain, countryside) have already committed to a more sustainable development, which now requires to be generalized and supported (structured).

Tourism activity needs to adapt and accelerate its transition toward a greener, positive and socially responsible future. The sector wishes to affirm its quest for a more balanced and sustainable industry.

To achieve this goal, the tourism trade professionals is seeking input from citizens who are first and foremost involved in or affected by leisure or business tourism activities. Through a public consultation survey, respondents can suggest compelling actions that the French tourism stakeholders must heed to and pursue to make the travel industry more responsible and sustainable at a national level.

This public consultation is part of the France Tourism Sector Committee’s reflections, a group comprised of French travel professionals working together around a sustainable national tourism strategy.
