In 2024, Make.org, together with ifok, convened two high-level roundtable discussions addressing the issues on the intersection of AI & Democracy. These roundtables brought together researchers, civil society representatives, public officials, as well as private sector stakeholders.
We now published a synthesis report that reviews both roundtable discussions and provides an in-depth analysis, yet accessible report of the issues raised and the potential advantages of generative AI in the context of democratic processes.
The roundtables generated insightful perspectives on both the opportunities and the risks that AI presents to democratic governance. Most importantly, the need to mitigate biases of the AI models, ensure efforts for sustainable usage, transparency and human-centered approach, as well as promotion of literacy and further research were highlighted. The report conclusions are illustrated by tangible case studies. It also includes contributions from roundtable participants, reflecting on the topics at hand.
The first roundtable focused on enabling democratic AI systems, while the second addressed the use of AI in democratic processes, such as citizen participation, public deliberation, or improving access to public institutions.
