As artificial intelligence accelerates against a backdrop of global instability, democracies face a historic challenge. AI can be misused to manipulate public opinion, disrupt elections, and reinforce authoritarian power. However, when governed ethically and transparently, AI can also promote accountability, empower citizens, and improve democratic governance.
The Alliance is committed to supporting these positive applications. Our objectives include safeguarding electoral integrity, enhancing democratic processes, and building societal adaptability to AI. We aim to protect citizens from manipulation, ensure free and fair elections, and promote trustworthy AI systems in democratic contexts. We also help societies prepare for AI-driven transformation through education, inclusive governance, and institutional adaptation.
The Alliance already brings together over 100 organizations from across the world, including :
NGOs such as the CyberPeace Institute: a NGO advancing cybersecurity to protect democracy and vulnerable communities. It investigates cyber threats, assesses their impact, and promotes responsible AI for a secure and inclusive digital space.
Universities : such as Sciences Po Paris: a leading institution in social and political sciences, conducting research on democracy and technology through initiatives like the médialab and the Center for Research on Social Inequalities.
Startups such as Agora Software: a French AI publisher enabling interaction between citizens, connected objects, and local governments through conversational interfaces.
Foundations such as Omidyar Network: a philanthropic organization whose mission is to bend the arc of the digital revolution toward shared power, prosperity, and possibility.
Intergovernmental Organization such as The International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance: an intergovernmental organization that supports democracy worldwide by developing and sharing comparative knowledge, assisting democratic reform and influencing policy.
Media Organization such as France Médias Monde: a French state-owned international media group (RFI, France 24, Monte Carlo Doualiya), key in promoting democratic values and verified global information, especially vital against disinformation in the AI age.
The Alliance is honored to count two strategic partners among its members:
The Center for Future Generations, a Brussels-based think tank helping leaders navigate the societal impact of emerging technologies. It promotes long-term, human-centered tech governance.
The Center for the Governance of Change, a research institute at IE University exploring the impact of emerging technologies on society. It provides insights and solutions to navigate technological disruption with whom we labelled the following series of initiatives :
Axel Dauchez and Alicia Combaz, Co-Founders of the Worldwide Alliance for AI & Democracy: “AI is transforming our societies at an unprecedented speed. We are proud to announce the first members of the Worldwide Alliance for AI & Democracy: a powerful coalition committed to shaping AI that empowers citizens and strengthens democratic resilience. This Alliance marks the first step toward a historic pact between AI and democracy.”
The Worldwide Alliance for AI and Democracy is entering a pivotal phase. We are initiating coordination among members and preparing a strong presence at key global events: VivaTech Paris, the AI Summit India 2026, the G20, and the Athens Democracy Forum. Joining the Alliance means helping shape a democratic, ethical, and inclusive future for AI, right where global decisions are made.
The Alliance remains open to new members who are using AI to strengthen democratic institutions and practices. Membership is free of charge and open to all qualified organizations. Join us!
Created during the AI Action Summit in Paris in February 2025, The Worldwide Alliance for AI and Democracy is a neutral and independent global coalition committed to ensuring that artificial intelligence strengthens democratic values rather than undermining them. Bringing together more than 100 members from civil society, academia, institutions, and companies across 30+ countries, the Alliance coordinates and amplifies initiatives to protect electoral integrity, foster democratic innovation, and build resilience to AI’s societal impact. Hosted by Make.org Foundation, the Alliance upholds transparency, pluralism, and civic engagement as core principles. Learn more: alliance-ai-democracy.org
